History:
The first new battleships built for the United States Navy since 1923.
These ships were "treaty battleships" in that they did not exceed 35,000 tons. They were not as heavily armored as some other nation's battleships, but their excellent weaponry and fire control made up for this shortcoming.
At the start of the United States' offensive against Japan, they were at the tip of the spear and took part in most of the battles in the Pacific region earning distinction on every mission.
