Sure you could make your own easily, but why spend the time when these can be so easily adapted to many different rudder situations? Easily sanded to fit hull contours and epoxied in place so you can get that boat ready for battle!
Very stable.

I purchased this for use in a destroyer, it is very stable and provides a nice mount for the rudder. For a small ship this works well as it has plenty of surface to keep it in one place. Unable to comment on how it would work for a larger ship.
